Copper pipe has been the standard for domestic plumbing for decades. It is durable, resistant to temperature extremes and proven over many years of use. Push-fit plastic fittings, most commonly JG Speedfit and Hep2O, were developed as a faster tool-free alternative and are now widely used for new installations and repair work. The core difference is in the fitting method. Copper requires compression fittings or solder ring fittings. Push-fit clips directly onto the pipe and locks in place with an internal collet ring. No heat is needed and the only tool required is a pipe cutter.

What is the difference?
Copper pipe has been the standard for domestic plumbing for decades. It is durable, resistant to temperature extremes, and proven over many years of use. Push-fit plastic fittings, most commonly JG Speedfit and Hep2O, were introduced as a faster, tool-free alternative and have become widely used for both new installations and repair work.
The core difference is in the fitting method. Copper requires either compression fittings or solder ring fittings. Push-fit simply pushes onto the pipe and locks in place, with no tools or heat required beyond a pipe cutter.
When to use copper pipe
Copper remains the preferred choice for:
- Concealed pipework within walls, floors or ceiling voids where future access is limited
- High-temperature applications close to the boiler on primary circuits
- External or exposed pipework where aesthetics matter
- Long runs where rigidity is an advantage
- Commercial or high-pressure applications

When to use push-fit plastic
Push-fit fittings, principally JG Speedfit and Hep2O are ideal for:
- Repairs and modifications where speed matters and the work is accessible
- Loft and underfloor installations where a blowtorch would be a fire risk
- DIY plumbing where soldering skills are not available

- Temporary connections and bypass work

Push-fit in concealed locations
Some insurance policies and building regulations guidance recommend against push-fit fittings in fully concealed locations such as within solid floors or behind dry-lining. Compression fittings are a no-heat alternative for concealed work. Always check with your building control officer if in doubt.
What about compression fittings?
Compression fittings work on copper pipe using a mechanical olive and nut. No solder or heat required. They are ideal for concealed locations where a blowtorch cannot be used, for connections to existing copper runs, and for joints that may need to be undone in future. FAQs
Can I mix copper and push-fit in the same system?
Yes many systems use both, copper for exposed or high-heat runs and push-fit for accessible repairs. Just make sure any transition fitting is rated for both materials.
Is push-fit as reliable as copper long-term?
It’s a proven, widely used system, but generally has a shorter expected lifespan than copper. Around 25 years versus 50 or more, which is why copper is still preferred for concealed, hard-to-access pipework.
Do I need building control sign-off for either?
Not usually for like-for-like repairs, but concealed installations may fall under building regulations guidance. Check with your building control officer if you’re unsure, particularly for push-fit in fully hidden locations.
